I spend a lot of time in airports for my job because I work for a Big Four consulting firm. In fact, there have been several months when I have flown for work every week!

1. Don’t forget to bring your own snacks.

2. Bring an empty water bottle with you.

I always pack an empty water bottle in my carry-on luggage so that I may refill it once I’ve cleared security. The majority of airports provide water bottle refill stations or at the very least a water fountain. Instead of buying a costly water bottle at the airport, this will help you save money.

I was shocked! I discovered a way to enjoy my morning coffee and fight the extra weight that was keeping me from seeing myself the way i wish!

3. Make sure you’ve checked in for your flight ahead of time.

Make sure you check in for your flight online at least 24 hours ahead of time so you don’t have to stand in line at the airport. If you weren’t allowed to choose your seat when you booked your ticket, this might also be a fantastic strategy to get a favorable seat assignment. Another reason to check-in for your flight before leaving the house: If you wait to check in with an agent, certain low-cost airlines are now charging you more!

 

4. Put on socks

When passing through security, certain airports, particularly in the United States, require you to remove your shoes. Wear socks if you don’t want to stand barefoot on the filthy airport floor! These are also useful for keeping your feet toasty during your travel.

 

5. Layer your clothing for your flight.

Dress in layers to keep comfortable at the airport and on your flight, as mentioned above. Airports and flights can be exceedingly chilly or extremely hot, with no happy medium in between, so layering will assist.

 

6. Don’t forget to bring a portable charger.

While waiting at the gate, not all airports have convenient plugs or charging stations, so bring a portable charger with you! I carry this portable phone charger with me everywhere I go, and it’s come in handy while I’m on the road.

 

 

7. Keep your laptop in a convenient location.

When traveling through security, you will need to remove your laptop or any other significant gadgets from your bag. Make sure to stow your laptop or other electronics in a side pocket of your luggage with easy access to prevent having to search through your suitcase while waiting in line.

If you travel frequently for business, you may want to invest in a carry-on suitcase with a laptop compartment. This makes reaching for your laptop at the airport a breeze!

 

8. Snap a picture of your parking spot.

Take a picture of your parking place and any helpful signage or numbering that will assist you to find it again when you return if you’ll be parking at the airport.

Nothing is more frustrating than returning after a trip and being unable to recall where you parked your car, causing you to spend an hour wandering around the airport parking garage!

 

9. Photograph your checked luggage

If your checked luggage goes missing, having a photo of it along with your luggage receipt will make it much easier to locate.

 

 

10. Hand sanitizer

Germs thrive in airports and airplanes, so bring a travel-sized hand sanitizer with you wherever you go. This hand sanitizer appeals to me because it can simply be clipped to your bag or purse.

 

11. Look for places to sleep.

If your flight is delayed or you have a long layover and need to spend the night in an airport, this website lists the best and worst sleeping spots in major airports across the world. Sleeping in an airport is never fun, but if you plan ahead of time and know where to go, you can make it a bit more bearable.

 

12. Keep hotel toiletries in your carry-on bag.

Bring additional travel-sized toiletries home with you every time you stay at a hotel. Then you’ll have a collection of TSA-approved toiletries to bring whenever you travel with only carry-on luggage.

(Plus, you won’t have to buy shampoo/conditioner as frequently!)

 

13. Tie a bright ribbon around your luggage.

If you’re checking luggage, tie a bright ribbon over the handle of your suitcase to make it stand out amid a sea of similar suitcases on the conveyor belt.

 

 

14. At the security checkpoint, turn left.

People naturally drift right, so when you get at a security checkpoint, go to the line that is furthest to the left and you might save a few minutes standing in line.

 

15. Have a certain airplane wardrobe in mind.

Choose comfortable clothing that will be your go-to for flight travel. (If I’m heading somewhere chilly, I always wear leggings, a loose, lightweight hooded sweatshirt, and a coat.)

You won’t be rushing for what to wear on the day of your journey if you have a designated outfit, and you’ll always be comfortable at the airport and on the plane.

 

16. Make a global entry investment

Having Global Entry has made a huge difference in my airport experience.

If you travel frequently (even if only 3-4 times per year), Global Entry is well worth the money. TSA Precheck is included with Global Entry, and it lets you avoid the main security queue and go straight to the TSA Precheck line (where you don’t have to remove your shoes or take your devices out of your suitcase).

When returning to the United States after an international trip, you can use an expedited customs line. Global Entry is $100 for a five-year period. If you just want TSA Precheck, you can obtain it for $85 for a five-year period.

 

My Global Entry was paid for by my employer, but I would gladly pay for it myself. Your Global Entry charge may be covered by some travel credit cards.
