He used the phrase “works of the law” to refer to Jewish legal practices that distinguished Jews from gentiles, such as circumcision, Sabbath observance, and severe food laws. Paul emphasizes the importance of what God has done through Jesus’ faithfulness-to-death, as well as the faith response to the gospel message, whether by Jew or gentile, in bringing individuals into the community of believers.
