What Is Righteousness By Faith

Thomas D. Stegman, S.J.’s book, Righteousness by Faith
Paul advances the concept of righteousness by faith, but it is more nuanced than many current readers believe.

What does “righteousness by faith” signify to Christian theologians?

“Righteousness through faith” is a term used by Christian theologians to describe the divinely bestowed status on persons who trustingly believe the gospel proclamation. God’s gift is made possible by God’s Son, Jesus Christ’s, sacrificial death and resurrection. Gal 2:15-21 and Rom 3:21-5:21 are two crucial chapters for understanding righteousness by faith.

The visual of the law court serves as a significant backdrop to Paul’s preaching. The verb “justify” comes from the same root as the noun “righteousness.” This word group conjures up images of being certified “in the right” by a judge and having a right connection given or restored. More precisely, the above-mentioned Pauline verses have been interpreted as pointing to the gift of divine forgiveness of sins conferred on one who responds to the gospel with faith, as opposed to any “works” or accomplishments that could bring one into good standing with God. The believer’s position goes from “guilty” to “righteous,” and his or her relationships with God and others improve.

The precise facts surrounding righteousness by faith have been a matter of discussion among Christians of various denominations, especially since the Reformation. Is the gift bestowed by God, for example, simply imputed (i.e., credited) or genuinely imparted (i.e., bestowed)? Is Paul focusing on the righteousness that comes from God via Christ, or on the righteousness that comes from Christ that now qualifies one before God? The idea of righteousness by faith has typically concentrated on the picture of God as judge, the atoning death of Jesus, the primacy of faith over works, and the new status of individual believers, notwithstanding various points of emphasis.

What did Paul mean when he said that righteousness comes through faith?

While the following summary captures key aspects of Paul’s teaching, new study contends that there is more to it. To begin with, Paul’s primary focus is community. The conflict about table fellowship between Jewish and gentile members of the community of believers in Antioch is the immediate context of Gal 2:15-21. Similarly, Paul emphasizes the new religious family in Romans, which includes both Jewish and gentile believers, both of whom can claim Abraham as “father” (Rom 4:11-12, Rom 4:16). The divine pronouncement of “righteousness” thus refers to the position of gentile believers’ participation in God’s covenant people (a status that includes remission of sins, to be sure), in fulfillment of the divine promises to Israel now accomplished through Christ.

Second, when Paul contrasts faith with works, he is referring to something other than works as a means of trying to earn one’s salvation. He used the phrase “works of the law” to refer to Jewish legal practices that distinguished Jews from gentiles, such as circumcision, Sabbath observance, and severe food laws. Paul emphasizes the importance of what God has done through Jesus’ faithfulness-to-death, as well as the faith response to the gospel message, whether by Jew or gentile, in bringing individuals into the community of believers.
