The Importance Of Prayer Sermon In Your Everyday Life

Jay Kesler, the current President of Taylor University and former President of Youth for Christ, was on one of his frequent travels. When it came time for lunch, the young man sitting next to him declined a lunch tray. This man sat with his head lowered, as if in prayer, for the entire lunchtime. Kesler was impressed (and perhaps humiliated) by the man’s commitment. He asked the young man whether he was a Christian because he appeared to be fasting. The young man responded with words that jolted Kelser to his core. “I am a Satanist, and my church members have decided to fast every Friday at noon. During that time, we pray for the Christian world’s leaders to fall. We wish that they will succumb to sexual vice and that their marriage will fall apart.Importance Of Prayer

Hearing that narrative gave me a shiver, and then I felt convicted. I’m far quicker to condemn apostate Christian leaders than to pray for them. But the issue isn’t just that we don’t pray for our leaders in a systematic way. The issue is that we have a hard time praying in any form. We’re all aware that we need to pray. We are aware of the importance of prayer. But it’s still difficult for us to pray.

This morning, I’d like to reflect on some prayer lessons that will aid us in our friendship with the Father. This morning, we’ll look at verses 9, 10 of Paul’s letter to the Colossians in the first chapter:

“As a result, we have not ceased praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will via all spiritual insight and understanding since the day we learned about you. And we pray for you so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in all things: “,,,,,,,,,,

I’d like to talk about the Importance of Prayer, the Content of Prayer, and then some of the Obstacles to Prayer this morning.

I was shocked! I discovered a way to enjoy my morning coffee and fight the extra weight that was keeping me from seeing myself the way i wish!

What I love about it is that it is natural, Vegetarian, Non-GMO, Gluten free... Perfect for everyday use!

I felt a boost in my metabolism and amazingly, I didn't feel that much hungry as before!

Prayer and Its Importance

The Apostle Paul tells the Colossians three times in the first ten verses of this epistle that he is praying for them. He expresses his gratitude to God for them and assures them that his prayers for them are never ending. These aren’t just nice clichés. Paul, I suppose, was praying for these individuals.

What is the definition of prayer?
The first question that comes to mind is, “What is prayer?” The short answer is that prayer is simply talking to God. When we offer our hearts to the Almighty, we pray.

This is something that people need to hear, as simple as it is. Too many people mistake prayer with a specific sound… Shakespearean English, which is dense with theological jargon, is frequently spoken very loudly. Others believe that prayer must take place in a specific location or with a specific posture. None of them, however, are prerequisites for real prayer. In fact, you can make yourself sound heavenly while doing nothing but chatting to yourself.

I enjoy telling Howard Hendricks’ tale about a young man who met Christ after many years in the world. He attended his first prayer meeting after his conversion. Everyone was standing up and saying their flowery (and perhaps ostentatious) prayers. Finally, this new convert took a knee to pray, saying, “This is Mel, by the way. I’m not sure if you remember who I am or not… Last Tuesday night, I had the pleasure of meeting you. I just wanted to express my gratitude for improving my life.” He then took a seat. Many others were moved to tears by the prayer’s simplicity and sincerity. I’m sure that brought a grin to the Father’s face as well.

There are a number of compelling reasons to pray.

It is a tremendous honor. Is there any higher honor than being granted an audience with the One who rules over all of creation? We’ve been invited to speak with the person who placed the stars in their current positions. We are encouraged to seek advice from the One who is both true and wise. We are asked to have a conversation with the All-Knowing One. Prayer is a privilege acquired by the blood of Jesus Christ, according to Puritan John Preston. Christ gave his life for this purpose, and it cost him the shedding of his blood, so that we would have access to the throne of grace through him. Will you let such an opportunity pass you by? If you do, his blood will be spilt in vain to the extent that it is in you. Because if you ignore the advantages obtained via that blood, you are ignoring the blood that procured them. [p.17 in The Puritans on Prayer]

Any healthy and growing connection necessitates conversation. The ability of a pair to communicate is sometimes used to assess the strength of a marriage partnership. To put it another way, a lack of communication is often cited as one of the first signs that a marriage is in peril. Our connection with the Father is no different. Conversation that is genuine, honest, and passionate is a hallmark of a healthy relationship. A lack of conversation, or solely public conversation, is a sign of a troubled relationship.

Because we are in the midst of a hard war, we should pray. We are constantly cautioned of the Devil’s plan to neutralize and demoralize us. “Our war is not against flesh and blood,” we’re told, “but against the rulers, the authorities, the powers of this dark world, and the spiritual forces of evil in the higher realms.” (Ephesians 6:10) We’re fighting a struggle and need God’s help. When we forsake prayer, we go into war defenseless, just as the enemy has gathered his armies. Do you think it’s significant that Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, felt the need to pray? If He didn’t feel capable of facing the struggle on His own, neither should we.
In our lives, prayer acts as a deterrent to sin. God exposes the rationalizations and excuses we make to pander to sin in the quiet times of solitary, honest prayer. God holds up a mirror to our lives through prayer so that we can see how we truly are…and repent.
It is possible to make a difference through prayer. I have no idea how it “works”… I’m aware that when people pray, their circumstances alter. Sometimes diseases are healed, strength is provided, direction is given, hearts are softened, and needs are satisfied. I’m aware that praying for people is beneficial to them. However, I am aware that when I pray, I am transformed.
The Prayer’s Content
Observing what Paul asks on behalf of the Colossians is one of the most illuminating portions of our passage. Paul is unconcerned with the material and temporal aspects of life. He isn’t particularly concerned with their comfort, but rather with their spiritual development.

Pray that they will be able to discern God’s will.

I ask that “God fill you with the knowledge of His will via all spiritual insight and understanding,” as Paul’s first request. The term “fill” refers to a state of being completely filled or controlled. The word for knowledge is a prefix that amplifies the meaning of the regular Greek word for knowledge. Physical health, material prosperity, successful testifying, or a fuller experience of spiritual gifts are not Paul’s primary concerns. Paul’s first and foremost goal is for the Colossians to grow in their love for and understanding of God, as well as their submission to His will.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus attempted to submit to the Father’s will. Many of us have succeeded in reversing this trend. We spend our time appealing with God to fulfill MY will. We want God to grant us our desires. We want Him to perceive our wishes as wise. Some go so far as to say that saying “Thy will be done” is a poor prayer. “Tell that to Jesus,” I can only respond in response to such drivel.

As we have a better understanding of God, we gain a better understanding of His will. We can often predict what our spouse will respond in response to a specific request in our marriage relationships. How are we going to do it? We’ve gained a better understanding of our companion. We know what they enjoy and what they despise. We have a solid notion of their “want.” The same can be said of God.

We grow to grasp His plan and purpose in life as we get to know Him via the Bible, prayer, and obedience. Paul prays that the Colossians would not be content with a merely surface relationship with God. He prays that they continue to grow in their connection with Him until they fully comprehend what God is doing and why.

Pray for the ability to DO God’s will.

Paul not only prays for the Colossians to be able to perceive God’s will, but he also prays for them to be able to discern God’s will. He also prays that they have the ability to DO God’s will. Paul prayed for them to understand in verse 10, “in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way.” Paul isn’t only asking for us to get more knowledge… He’s hoping that through learning more about God, we’ll be able to live more faithfully in His presence. “You can be a master of theology and a failure at living,” as one wise person put it.

Paul is looking for harmony in these young Christians’ lives. He prays that they would comprehend… and that once they have comprehended, they will live on the basis of that comprehension. Next week, we’ll go deeper into Christian living.

Do you see how different this prayer’s content is from the prayers we usually pray? Are you “aiming low” when you pray for others? Are you pleading with God for petty things while ignoring the more important ones? Are you concentrating on the transient while ignoring the eternal? Dare we spend all of our time thinking about the body and none of our time thinking about the soul?

Overcoming Prayer Obstacles
Before I wrap up this all-too-brief discussion on the importance of prayer, let me address two barriers to prayer.

WAY TOO TIRED
Our schedules are one of the most significant barriers to prayer. We say it’s difficult to find time to pray. We require our morning sleep in order to function during the day. After work, we are occupied with family activities. We stay up late since we have work to finish the next day. We want to pray, but we don’t have time, we say.

Allow me to pose some pointed questions to you. Do you take a break to eat every day? Do you wash your clothes? Do you watch the news or read the newspaper? Do you have time to tune in to the big game on TV? Do you have any spare time?
